For months, a woman named Sher had been messaging me on Instagram, inviting me to visit her family’s small restaurant in Laval-des-Rapides. On a recent weeknight, I finally took her up on the offer.
Georges Sous-Marins et Pizza has been a fixture in the strip mall at 255 Boulevard de la Concorde Ouest for 36 years. The Kirakossian family took over about a dozen years ago, but the roots of the business run even deeper. Patriarch Mike Kirakossian grew up working for his father, who owned several Mr. Donut locations. Later, while raising five children with Sher, Mike operated a bar nearby in New Bordeaux.

Today, Georges remains a true neighbourhood staple—and on the night I visited, it was buzzing. The place was a beehive of activity, and I genuinely enjoyed spending time with the family. Daughter Brittany and son Aaron—now an electrician by trade—were working alongside Mike, joined by their cousin Stephanie. The other children, Joshua, Jordan, and Sabrina, weren’t there that evening, but the strong family presence was unmistakable.
As for the food, it didn’t disappoint. I sampled a smoked meat and mushroom pizza, a chicken sub, and a small slice of apple pie—all delicious. Mike even packed up the leftovers for me to take home. If you’re heading to Place Bell, this spot is just a three-minute drive away, with plenty of free parking.
The menu is extensive, featuring not only a wide variety of pizzas and subs, but also salads, calzones, pasta, brochettes, gyros, hot dogs, burgers, chicken sandwiches, fish and chips, poutine, club sandwiches, fries, and more. There are also excellent lunch specials and additional deals available at the counter.
Mike’s passion for his work is evident. He puts in long hours, taking Sundays and Mondays off to rest and handle supplies, while the kids step in to keep things running. At 63, he’s beginning to think about semi-retirement, as the next generation prepares to take over. Brittany, in particular, has plenty of ideas for modernizing the business—even hinting at a possible name change, since “Georges” was the original owner.

While seating is limited, Georges thrives as a takeout and delivery destination. They work with all the major delivery apps and also have their own drivers, serving customers within a set radius (with a small surcharge beyond it). After I posted a video about the restaurant on Instagram, I was flooded with messages from loyal customers who’ve been coming here for years—a testament to its lasting appeal.
