About MTL Resto Rap

Montreal Food, Restaurants and the Stories Behind Them

Welcome to MTL Resto Rap, a Montreal-based restaurant publication dedicated to discovering, reviewing and telling the stories behind the city’s restaurants, chefs, restaurateurs and food culture.

Montreal has always been a city with a strong relationship with food. From neighbourhood institutions that have been serving generations of families to exciting new restaurants just finding their place, there is always another story waiting to be told. MTL Resto Rap exists to explore those stories while sharing the experiences that make dining in Montreal such a memorable part of the city.

More Than a Restaurant Review

A restaurant is about much more than the food that arrives at the table. It is about the people who opened the doors, the family that has kept the business going, the chef who decided to try something different and the customers who have made a particular place part of their own lives. Our stories combine restaurant reviews with the history, personalities, neighbourhoods and experiences that make each establishment unique.

Sometimes a restaurant has been around for decades and carries an entire neighbourhood’s history with it. Other times, it is a brand-new idea that gives Montreal diners something they have never experienced before. That variety is what makes the city’s restaurant scene so interesting to explore.

Montreal Is Our Table

MTL Resto Rap is rooted in Montreal, but our coverage is not limited to one neighbourhood or one style of food. We explore restaurants across Montreal and the surrounding area, from longstanding institutions to independent neighbourhood restaurants, new openings, food halls, cafés, chains and the many businesses that contribute to the region’s culinary landscape.

Montreal’s food scene is constantly changing, and that is part of what makes covering it so much fun. A familiar restaurant can reinvent itself, a new chef can bring a fresh perspective to an old idea and a neighbourhood can suddenly become home to an entirely new collection of restaurants. There is always something happening around the table.

Published by Tony Medeiros

MTL Resto Rap is created and published by Tony Medeiros, a Montreal-based writer and publisher with more than two decades of experience covering food, restaurants, pop culture and entertainment. His restaurant writing combines personal experience with storytelling, history and a genuine interest in the people behind the plate.

Tony’s approach is rooted in curiosity. A restaurant is not simply a place to eat; it can also be a reflection of a neighbourhood, a family, a culture, a business idea or a particular moment in Montreal’s history. His work on MTL Resto Rap includes restaurant reviews, food stories, restaurant news and features about the people and businesses that make Montreal’s culinary community so interesting.

The People Behind the Food

One of the things we enjoy most about restaurant writing is meeting the people behind the businesses. Every restaurant has a story, and those stories can begin in many different ways. Sometimes it starts with a family recipe passed from one generation to another, while other times it begins with an entrepreneur who sees an opportunity or a chef who wants to create something completely different.

Those stories deserve attention. A review should tell you what was on the plate, but a good restaurant story should also tell you something about the people who put it there.

A Record of Montreal’s Restaurant Scene

Over the years, MTL Resto Rap has become more than a collection of restaurant reviews. It has developed into an ongoing record of Montreal’s culinary scene, documenting openings, new concepts, established institutions, restaurant changes and the people behind them.

Some restaurants remain part of Montreal for generations, while others come and go quickly. By documenting these places and the people behind them, MTL Resto Rap creates a record of a food scene that is constantly evolving. That history matters because restaurants are part of the history of a city.

Honest, Personal and Curious

Our approach to restaurant writing is personal. We want readers to know what we experienced, what stood out and what made a particular restaurant worth talking about, while recognizing that food is personal and everyone’s experience can be different.

The purpose is not to tell readers what they must like. It is to introduce them to places, people and dishes they might want to discover for themselves. Sometimes we find something exceptional, sometimes we discover a place that brings back memories, and sometimes a restaurant surprises us completely. That is the fun of exploring.

Part of a Larger Publishing World

MTL Resto Rap is its own publication and brand, with its own editorial focus on restaurants and food culture. It is also one part of the wider publishing world of Tony Medeiros, who is also the creator and publisher of Sandbox World, an independent publication covering pop culture, entertainment, books, comics, music, food and other subjects that spark curiosity.

Tony’s personal work and publishing history can be found at TonyMedeiros.com, including About Tony Medeiros, which serves as the central home for information about his writing, publishing history and creative work. MTL Resto Rap maintains its own identity while being clearly connected to Tony’s broader publishing work.

Still Hungry

Montreal’s restaurant scene never stands still, and neither do we. There are always new restaurants opening, old favourites changing, chefs trying something new and stories waiting to be discovered. That means there will always be another table to visit, another dish to taste and another person whose story deserves to be told.

That’s what MTL Resto Rap is all about: Montreal restaurants. Montreal food. Montreal stories. And we’re still hungry.
