Authentic Persian Cuisine Shines at Family-Run Ispahan in Pointe-St. Charles

I cannot remember how many times I have sampled Persian cuisine in Montreal, but a recent summer evening at Ispahan in Pointe-St. Charles left a particularly lasting impression on both my dinner guest and me.

The family-run restaurant is the creation of Farah Esfahani and her son, Arsalan Khalilian, with support from other family members, including her other son, Erfan, an aerospace engineer by day. The family immigrated to Montreal from Iran in 2011 and initially opened a French-inspired lounge in 2017 before pivoting to the cuisine closest to their hearts in 2022: authentic Persian cooking.

The restaurant takes its name from Isfahan, the historic Iranian city where the family once lived. Farah and Arsalan quickly built a loyal following among Montreal’s Iranian community and beyond. In fact, some of their most devoted patrons come from the Jewish community. Earlier this year, members of Temple Emanu-El-Beth-Sholom even hosted a Purim celebration at the restaurant.

Ispahan specializes in traditional Persian cuisine, with an emphasis on expertly grilled meats and time-honoured family recipes. Among its signature dishes are the Joojeh Kebab (saffron-marinated chicken skewers), Koobideh Kebab (minced lamb and veal skewers), Mahicheh (slow-braised lamb shank), Kashk-e-Bademjan (eggplant dip), and the refreshing Shirazi salad of cucumber, tomato and herbs.

Farah personally looked after our table with the same passion she brought to her beautiful cookbook, Un Voyage Culinaire en Iran, published last year. Although she has a background in information technology, her talent in the kitchen is undeniable—a gift clearly shared by her son.

Our culinary journey began with a superb selection of appetizers. What initially appeared to be pita bread turned out to be tafton, a thinner, softer Persian flatbread made exclusively for Ispahan by a local Iranian bakery. It served as the perfect vehicle for a trio of traditional starters.

The Mast-o-Mousir was creamy, cool and delicately tangy, combining yogurt with a subtle garlicky, onion-like flavour. Equally memorable was the olive, pomegranate and walnut dip, which offered a delightful balance of sweetness and acidity. The standout, however, may have been the Ispahan Kashk Bademjan—fried eggplant seasoned with caramelized onions, garlic and mint, then crowned with kashk, a rich goat’s milk yogurt that added remarkable depth and complexity.

The Joojeh Kebab exceeded expectations. Tender chicken breast, marinated in saffron, olive oil, lemon and onions, emerged from the grill juicy and bursting with flavour. The Koobideh Kebab was equally impressive. These two skewers of minced milk-fed lamb and veal were exceptionally tender, cutting like butter and virtually melting in our mouths.

And then there was the saffron rice.

This Persian staple is far more than a side dish. Fluffy white rice infused with precious saffron develops a beautiful golden hue, a delicate floral aroma and subtle honey-like earthiness. The preparation is meticulous: the rice is soaked, parboiled and then steamed so that every grain remains long, separate and perfectly fluffy. A portion is blended with saffron-infused water before being layered over the white rice, creating a dish that is as visually stunning as it is delicious.

For dessert, we shared saffron ice cream and Turkish baklava accompanied by fragrant Persian tea. It was the perfect finale to an exceptional meal. The restaurant also offers a thoughtful selection of signature cocktails and carefully chosen wines.

Portions throughout the evening were remarkably generous, ensuring we left with several takeout containers and enough leftovers to enjoy the next day. The dining room itself is warm and inviting, decorated with photographs showcasing the beauty and diversity of Iran’s landscapes and culture.

On selected Saturday evenings, Ispahan adds even more energy to the experience with a live DJ and traditional dance performances. The restaurant also welcomes group reservations.
