Geez Resto Bar Café is a hidden gem for a good burger, beer, music and fun

A few months ago musician Dimosthenis James  Papadimitrios recommended I check out Geez Resto Bar Café on St. Jacques Street in NDG. “Great burgers and ambiance,” he promised me.

I reached out to co-owner Steve Towell and while it took some time to fit it into my schedule, I am glad I did for this is indeed a hidden gem in the West of Montreal. Located in the strip mall that also houses Eggs & Fruiti, there is plenty of free parking. This quaint little bar can seat 88 people indoors and on a seasonal terrasse. Towell runs the operation with Mark Fraser. On the night I dropped by, Towell was at the grill while his wife Debbie and daughter Sara worked the bar and waited tables.

With sports memorabilia decorating the walls, there are two flat-screen TVs, five VLTS (video lottery machine), a good old-fashioned jukebox and a few dart boards. There is, in fact, even a league for dart players based here.

This is a fun place to hang out. Once a month now, the Comedy Nest Road Show stops by with a host and three standup comics. Lucky me, that was the case on the night I visited. They also have live music on Friday or Saturday nights. “I am always trying to keep things fresh,” Towell said, noting that he hopes to start karaoke and games nights as well.

The bar often attracts crowds like this for special events.

This location is an extension of the original Billy Geez on Somerled, which closed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020. Soon after, they relocated to St. Jacques Street.

The place is best known for its famous Geez Burgers and its beer on tap. I can honestly give a thumbs up here after thoroughly enjoying their double bacon cheeseburger, served with their special hot sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion. The sauce represents their own private and secret recipe and yes, it is quite tasty. They could do well for themselves by bottling and selling it in local supermarkets. I also had some crispy fries on the side, dipping them in their homemade gravy.

My friend opted for their crispy chicken burger and gave it a big thumbs up. You can also get poutine, chicken wings, coffee, espresso, latte/cappuccino, iced coffee and hot chocolate. They did offer steaks at a certain point, “but since we never freeze our meat and that was not a big seller, we decided to remove it from the menu.”  Geez Resto Bar Café is located at 6710 St. Jacques. Log on to www.geezrestobarcafe.com or call (514) 419-2033. Opening hours are 10 am to midnight on weekdays and 8 am to midnight on weekends; for the kitchen, it is 11 am to 9 pm.
