Melrose Resto in Little Italy offers a tasty menu and live comedy

Steve D’Alete, Jimmy Scalia and  Alessandro Gangi.

In 2012 Jimmy Scalia and Steve D’Alete opened Melrose Restoon St. Laurent Blvd. in Little Italy. It is a cozy little spot that seats 70 people, plus 20 more on a seasonal terrace. Heading the kitchen is Alessandro Gangi.

I’ve had my eye on this spot for some time. Twice a week (and sometimes three) Melrose Resto teams up with Sid Khullar’s Montreal Comedy Club (www.mtlcomedyclub.com), which puts on standup comedy shows at about 20 venues in and around the city. Khullar is the brother of the already legendary Sugar Sammy, who sometimes makes surprise appearances at his programs.

Since I had a standing offer from Khullar and Melrose Resto to come by and experience their offerings anytime, I did exactly that one weeknight. The food was terrific and so was the lineup of eight comedians.

Melrose Resto has developed a good following of regular customers. But there are always newcomers discovering the place, as well as tourists. They also make the venue available for private events.

Chef Gangi wanted me to taste a little bit of everything so at first I sampled some arancini, an Italian rice ball stuffed with spinach. The crab cakes, served with spicy mayonnaise, were ever so crispy and tasty while the caprese, a salad of fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil, was delicious. In particular, the baby tomatoes were fresh as can be. Next came the  Jack Daniel’s chicken bites,  with chipotle BBQ sauce.

There were a lot of other tempting items on the menu.  Steve surprised me with some ravioli pesto, ravioli stuffed with ricotta, basil and pasta as well as their prosciutto pizza, tomato sauce, fior di latte cheese, mozzarella, prosciutto and arugula. It was terrific to have some leftovers to enjoy at the office the next day.

The Philly cheesecake, penne, gnocchi rose and selection of other pizzas come highly recommended. They also have a nice wine and custom cocktail list. Comedy shows take place on Wednesday and Friday evenings and sometimes on Saturdays.

As summer approaches, Scalia and D’Alete look forward to seeing Little Italy come alive. Melrose Resto is located at 6548 Boulevard Saint-Laurent. Opening hours are  5 pm to midnight Wednesday and Thursday and 5 pm to 2 am Friday and Saturday. You can call 514-508-4227 or log on to www.melroserestaurant.ca. You can also order online or do pickup.
