With Wellington Street in Verdun being named the coolest in the entire world, according to the popular Time Out website, I dropped by the new Wellington Bagel Sandwicherie recently.
Chef Derek Curzi and his team offer the best gourmet sandwiches on the block, such as mouthwatering porchetta, Montreal smoked meat, the famous Wellington beef, crispy chicken cutlet, tender juicy chicken parmigiana, their iconic Chicago all-beef hot dog, freshly baked in-house pastries and always hot out of the oven bagels.
I sampled a hot smoked meat sandwich on a bagel, known as a “bagel-wiche,” and it was superb – garnished with coleslaw and a pickle. On some days there are lineups on the street for this particular item (and others). The place also sells homemade tomato and meat sauce, as well as tomato and meat lasagna, made by Chef Curzi, whose day is at the St. Pius X Career Centre and Culinary Institute in Ahuntsic of the English Montreal School Board. The owner is Jimmy Rennie, well-known for his development of Ville Émard Bagels. He sold the building on Monk recently and was able to grab such prime real estate at the corner of Wellington and Rue Rielle. The Ville Émard name will live on via his wholesale business, supplying freshly packed bagels to Sud Ouest grocery stores.
Not only did Jimmy and Derek send me home with a huge box of bagels I shared with colleagues at work and neighbours, but I also got to sample some of their cinnamon twist danishes. Yep, they have some tempting sweets on the menu as well.
This is primarily a take-out spot. Curbside pickup is available. However, there is seating for about 10 people inside. You can get home delivery via UberEats and Door Dash. They have already started a corporate catering division, featuring fresh hot sandwiches, bagels, a variety of pasta, meats and salads, as well as their in-house pastries!
