Some restaurants need advertising, influencers, and social media to get people through the door; others have been part of Montreal for so long that nobody needs to tell us about them. Décarie Hot Dogs is one of those places. I have been going there at different points in my life, and every time I return, something feels familiar. The steamies, the fries, the poutine, the counter and that old-school atmosphere bring back memories of a Montreal that seems to get a little harder to find every year.

Décarie Hot Dogs has been part of the Saint-Laurent food scene since 1969, and one of the reasons it has lasted is because it never tried to become something it wasn’t. Tom Vriniotis, whose family has operated Décarie Hot Dogs since it opened, once summed up the restaurant’s appeal perfectly when he said, “People have made it part of their lives.”

I understand exactly what he means because I’ve done the same thing. I’ve been coming here at different points throughout my life, and the appeal has never really changed. For me, Décarie isn’t just about grabbing a hot dog. It is the familiarity of returning to a place where you already know what you are going to order and know you are going to leave full.

What I find interesting now is seeing younger generations doing exactly what so many of us did before them. They come for the steamies and poutine because they are affordable and good, but somewhere along the way, the restaurant becomes part of their own Montreal memories. That is how a restaurant becomes more than a place to eat.

I don’t need to tell Montrealers about Décarie Hot Dogs. Word of mouth has already done that job for generations, and seeing those crowds of students, families, regulars and first-time customers tells you everything you need to know.

The steamies are good, the poutine delivers, the prices make sense and the service is quick. More importantly, Décarie has managed to remain itself while so much around it has changed. I’ve been coming back throughout my life, and now I get to watch another generation discover the same place.
