Miranda Medeiros tries 49th Parallel coffee and Lucky’s Doughnuts

A beloved coffee franchise from British Columbia makes its way to Montreal. The 49th Parallel opened its doors in Old Montreal this summer with delicious and sustainably sourced coffee along with to-die-for doughnuts.

The 49th Parallel serves a diverse coffee menu using beans from their own cutting-edge roastery. Not only is this spot a no-brainer for a good cup of coffee but it is the scene for some premiere gourmet doughnuts made fresh throughout the day. These doughnuts are hand-crafted culinary delights from Vancouver-based Lucky’s Doughnuts.

This coffee and doughnut shop feels premium. With an old meets new modern aesthetic you can’t help but feel like you’re treating yourself to a prime choice of coffee and pastry.

We tried out their Venezuelan and filter coffee along with a few picks from their wide selection of gourmet doughnuts. I fell in love with the Venezuelan coffee, it was rich, creamy, wonderful and served up with some adorable latte art. The doughnuts were incredible too. My favourite was the apple bacon fritter. This magnificent beast of a doughnut was covered in a sweet and savory glaze, topped with a generous amount of bacon and was absolutely out of this world. Best doughnut I’ve tasted in Montreal. The cinnamon sugar old-fashioned doughnut was another one I loved to bits, it was like a churro decided to make itself into a doughnut and it was fantastic! The French Cruller was an instant classic and the more experimental bagel-esk doughnut filled with cream cheese felt like an encapsulation of a quintessential Montreal breakfast.

Overall, the 49th Parallel has both exceptional coffee and doughnuts, everything felt like a total treat. I will definitely be returning and trying out more of those amazing doughnuts and getting another cup of Venezuelan coffee!
