Ottawa Reviews

  • Zak’s serves up the classic diner experience at four Ottawa locations

Zak’s Diner was established in 1986 by John Borsten and some partners, one of whom had a son named Zak, there are four locations for this ’50s-themed eatery.

  • Métropolitain Brasserie in Ottawa serves up appetizing lunch, dinner and weekend brunch

Métropolitain Brasserie is home to Ottawa’s largest raw bar. Open seven days a week, serving lunch, dinner and brunch on weekends, we had a wonderful summer Saturday evening dinner on their spacious patio.

  • The iconic Al’s Steakhouse is still thriving  more than five decades after it opened

Montreal is known for some iconic steakhouses, such as Moishes (soon to reopen), Rib ‘N Reef and Gibbys. On my most recent trip to Ottawa,  I got to experience the legendary Al’s Steakhouse.

  • For some of the best Japanese cuisine in Ottawa, Shinka Sushi Bar fits the bill

Shinka Sushi Bar (previously known as New Generation Sushi) is located on Laurier Avenue West near Elgin. It has been around since 2004. When the COVID-19 pandemic, it pivoted exclusively to take-out and delivery. Their clientele responded in strong numbers so they have stuck to this format. A second location will open later this year at a location to be determined.

  • Suffering from Red Lobster withdrawal? A trip to Ottawa will do the trick

Red Lobster still operates in four Canadian provinces – Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. There are two locations in Ottawa. The one at 1499 St. Laurent Blvd., just as you enter the city, has always been our “go-to” spot. Twenty years ago, I did a few reviews for my newspapers and connected with General Manager Ian Forrester. When I went there for a curbside pickup back in December, Ian was still on the job. It turns out he has been there for an incredible 36 years.

  • Pizza Salvatoré revels in the success of an extraordinary expansion plan

Pizza has always been one of my favorite dishes, so when I was driving along Sources Blvd. in Dollard des Ormeaux recently and spotted a storefront at Centennial Plaza with the name “Salvatore,” I was naturally curious. Was this a new take-out place? Upon some quick research, I was surprised to learn that this is a growing chain in Quebec, with 61 Pizza Salvatoré franchises and counting.  Thus far there are a handful of locations in and near the  Greater Montreal area, including  Dollard, St. Leonard, Laval, Repentigny, Terrebonne and Mascouche, as well as the South Shore. They have expanded to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, with Ontario (London) next on their radar screen.

  • The growing Saint Houblon restaurant group noted for its beer, pub fare, and weekend brunch

I have been curious about Saint Houblon for several years now, often passing by their Côte des Neiges area location. When I saw them listed on MTLàTABLE a few months back there was no question this was high on my list.

  • Rock’n Deli chain continues to grow and featuring Halal certified smoked meat

In 1992 Vicky Arghiriu and Ihab Kolta were a newly married couple working for competing companies, Bell Mobility and Rogers. That did not sit well with their superiors and they were let go. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Family members encouraged them to start their own business. So, when they learned that a small restaurant called Deli Connaisseur at Alexis Nihon Plaza was for sale they took the leap into an entirely new venture.

  • La Molisana in Ahuntsic has been serving diners for 40 years

La Molisana is renowned for its fine Italian cuisine. This includes homemade pasta, veal, seafood and authentic pizza baked in their splendid wood oven. 40 years later the restaurant thrives.

  • Restaurant Calzone has been serving West Islanders for a quarter of a century now

Next spring,  Restaurant Calzone will celebrate 25 years of successful operations in Kirkland. This is a family-run business, with Tony Spinelli, his son Mike and son-in-law Shayne Fuller at the helm.

  • The New York Capital of Albany represents a quick and easy getaway for Montrealers
I have been to the city of Albany, New York many times. In January 2020, I made my last visit there just prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, which put a pause on travel. Returning again more recently, I was reminded of why I like the state capital so much. In particular, I was fortunate to […]

  • Glenn J. Nashen’s Five Alarm Culinary Adventure at Sushi Taxi

Not even a major shutdown of Notre Dame Street in Little Burgundy could keep us away from a gastronomic luxury take-out of sushi and Asian fusion at Sushi Taxi. No exaggeration! The fire department literally closed down the street for an emergency. However, the conscientious staff called to say, ‘stand by’. As soon as the ‘all clear’ sounded we headed into the bistro-chique locale.

  • Glenn J. Nashen orders a birthday celebration from ChuChai

My wife Judy and I have been fans of ChuChai on St. Denis since it opened back in 1997. Indeed, I had been a regular at its predecessor eatery, Chao Phraya, which was around for nearly a decade before it transitioned into its present namesake.

  • Glenn J. Nashen grabs a kosher slice at PizzaPita Prime

PizzaPita has been going strong in the Snowdon area for more than 30 years. With their recent move across Decarie Boulevard to the former Pizza Hut location in front of Decarie Square, at the corner of Decarie and Vezina, they have a prime spot to garner the attention of thousands of commuters, shoppers and locals each and every day. Hence they’ve rebranded PizzaPita to PizzaPita Prime.

  • The Nashen family falls in “LOV” with first dine-in experience since restaurants reopened

Our first restaurant outing since the pandemic was to Cuisine Botanique LOV in Laval’s trendy Centropolis. While apprehensive about returning to dining out, any tension quickly dissipated as we approached the modern eatery along the wide, car-free boulevard. There we found an airy and very inviting terrasse. We were greeted by the friendly staff who showed us to our outdoor table set-back from other dinner guests.

  • Glenn J. Nashen finds African cuisine in Plateau Mont-Royal

Always on the lookout for something different and experiential to try among Montreal’s thousands of restaurants, I recently happened upon a great find tucked in among the eclectic, unique spots in Montreal’s Mile End district of Plateau Mont-Royal. And of the many eateries I’ve experienced in our great city this was my first outing to an African restaurant (northwestern Africa to be more specific, and Mauritanian to be pinpoint accurate).

  • Athena Pizzeria restaurant, a great new find on West Island

Every neighborhood has a cozy dependable pizzeria in Montreal. The West Island has a handful of great pizzerias. I discovered Athena Pizzeria in Pierrefonds-Roxboro close to Boulevard Sources. This fine eatery is no stranger to the loyal patrons of the area. If you bowl at Bowl-O-Drome, you will most likely grab a sub or pizza at Athena Pizzeria.

  • Tony Medeiros and his wife get B12 Burger for Le Burger Week 2022

The good folks of Le Burger Week send us some burgers from B12 Burger for Le Burger Week 2022 which ran from September 1-14. Our food delivered by Doordash.

  • Tony Medeiros and his wife have a quiet dinner at Restaurant Bellissimo

My wife and I were looking for a quaint and cozy private restaurant for our first outing together since the lifting of Covid restrictions. We took a leap of faith and broke away from take-out mode.  We were generously invited to do a review of Restaurant Bellissimo in Dorval.  The restaurant is in a bustling section of Lakeshore Drive with a few shops encompassed by residential homes.  If you live in the area, Restaurant Bellissimo is within walking distance of the Dorval City Hall. Well, centralized, Restaurant Bellissimo has a steady flow of local customers.  There is a parking lot in the vicinity that offers plenty of free parking in the area. Hassle-free, no need to circle around to find a spot.

  • Tony Medeiros and his daughter have a magical time at Juliette & Chocolat

Juliette & Chocolat is more than chocolate, it’s a festival for the senses.  My daughter and I were invited to the grand opening of their new location on the west island.  We were greeted with an overflowing chocolate fountain of delight.  I felt like I was on a Willy Wonka factory tour with my inner child.  This was not going to be a regular review of the norm.  There were kids with plastic bib aprons ready to get messy with their chocolate treats.  Yes, get ready to get messy with your chocolate food. This was a perfect opportunity to spend some quality father-daughter time at Juliette & Chocolat.  This is the place where your sweet tooth gets re-activated. Everything in the restaurant looks so chocolicious! That should be a word.

  • Tony Medeiros and his family try out the new BeaverTails in Vaudreuil-Dorion

BeaverTails evokes wonder for many people. I always get excited when I see a food truck at our local grocery store on the West Island. When you have a guest over, there is nothing great but to offer them a BeaverTail.  The company has come a long way from its original concept in 1978.  They now offer 12 different varieties of Beavertails.  Besides Tim Hortons, there is nothing more Canadian than BeaverTails. Dignitaries from around the globe have tasted Canada’s most famous indulgence. The brand is so popular that it reaches out to six other countries.
